Recording of Aubade

Preston recorded Janice playing this on the piano using an old cassette tape.  We did the best we could to digitize and clean the audio file.  Click on the link below to listen.

We are so grateful to Cole Tutino, Indiana University, for his notation of Mom's composition, Aubade for the piano.  Mom also composed this piece for handbells.  Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in either of these sheets.

UNC-TV Video playing the accordion

An anonymous poster shared a youtube video of Mom playing the accordion as a teenaqer at UNC-TV.  She was amazing at even a young age...  enjoy :).  I also recall she said she played on the Lawrence Welk show.   Wonder if that is out there somewhere too...

Connections

Some time has passed since my last post as work and Motherhood have kept me busy, however my plans to soon post videos, more paintings on the web site, share stories and much more are all "on deck".  This pause has produced time to connect and reconnect through the very medium of this blog, however.  Precisely one of the reasons it was created!   I am very grateful for those of you that have recently reached out to me and my family via e-mail to inform me of our distant family relation and to those of you who are family friends....renewing memories that ought not to be forgotten.  Abu Bakar Tambi and Zainah, old family friends through Dad's work at NCSU, now in Malaysia.  My father recalls the story when Bakar reached out to shoo an insect off Mom's painting only to realize it wasn't going anywhere.  Jerry McCall, a distant cousin whose Grandmother was painted by Mom and hung in our house for years.  Hearing about her "infectious laugh" and spirit ignites more curiosity about Mom's heritage... and warrants a visit to the Asheville, NC area to pass on this painting to a family who knows "Great Aunt Olivia".
More soon,
Trish, David, Samantha and soon to be Baby Haak, #2.

Ecology

As an Ecologist I just love pouring over Janice’s paintings looking for all of the interactions she saw. In this piece there are a few pollinators, an herbivore, and a predator who will undoubtedly make this a tri-trophic cascade.
Locating faces here and there I find that most of the time her representations are accurate enough for me to identify the plants and animals to Genus if not species. This accurate reconstruction is one of the features I’ve always loved about Janice’s paintings.

Searching for paintings

As I continue to scan in transparencies and slides, I realize that there are numerous paintings out there where we do not have documentation of the location/owner (yet I do have some) and some were not photographed.  I welcome anyone who knows where her paintings are located (or if you have one) to feel free to write me.  I would dearly love to hear from you and would look forward to ensuring the painting is documented appropriately.  trish.haak@gmail.com

There is one in particular which I found was auctioned off that happens to be my absolute favorite.  It was painted in Florida and it is unfortunately one that was never photographed for her collection.  It would be like searching for a needle in a haystack to find this painting.  I know it was auctioned off in St. Louis, MO though!
